Suresh Raina crossed the 5000 marks in the first match of the Chennai Super Kings new IPL 2019, He reached 15 out of his last 19 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai. Virat Kohli will be in the next position: After the Chennai match, he was only 46 short in 5000.
Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina were involved in a hot race for the top spot since the 2016 IPL season, when the Indian captain scored 973, marking the start of a red-hot fight for the most runs in the history of the league.
He is followed by Rohit Sharma (4498) and Gautam Gambhir (4217). The leading non-Indian David Warner is seventh in the list with 4099 runs. Raina is the highest runner for any senior T20 tournament. He achieved this milestone in 177 matches with the strike-rate of 138.15, including 35 fifties and a century.
Raina last played an international match for India on the tour of England in July 2018. The Indian World Cup team has more or less settled but the number 4 position is still for Grab and if Raina has a good season in the IPL 2019, then it can be the right choice for the playing XI.
This IPL season is the last opportunity for Raina to showcase his talent and return to the Indian team before the ICC World Cup in May.
